SILVA Compass Expedition S

The Silva Expedition S compass is the best choice if you want a targeting compass with many functions.

Silva Expedition S is equipped with a grip ring, rubber feet on the bottom so that the compass sits well on the map, removable carrying strap with safety hole, inclinometer to determine the steepness of the terrain, luminous markings for navigation in the dark, magnifying glass and map scales in millimeters and inches. In Expedition, the scales are on the base plate so that you can measure distances more easily. GPS scales 1:25,000 and 1:50,000. There are also integrated settings for magnetic misalignment (declination correction).

A sighting compass is a compass with a built-in mirror that allows you to see the compass needle clearly when aiming at a point on the terrain. This allows you to take more accurate bearings than with a standard ruler compass. This type of compass is best used in open terrain when you want to determine directions over long distances. This is because you keep your eyes on the compass when looking over the terrain.

The slope gradient map is useful both for identifying the avalanche danger and for assessing the challenge of the terrain. Knowing the steepness also allows you to estimate how much longer the route will be due to the steepness. In steep terrain you should always be aware of the avalanche danger. The risk increases when the gradient is more than 30 degrees and the slope gradient map makes it easier to assess the risk.

The compass also has a removable lanyard with scales (1:25 and 1:50) and serves as a ruler. You can use it to calculate how long a distance is.
