The self-inflating Therm-a-Rest Trail Scout sleeping pad, 2.5 cm thick, is sufficiently compact and offers three-season comfort with an R-value of 3.1. The high-quality foam core, encased in woven fabric, makes the Trail Scout one of Therm-a-Rest's most durable and high-performing pads.
It features a WingLock valve, which allows the mat to be inflated three times faster thanks to the larger opening and one-way inflation. Furthermore, the new design prevents air from escaping during inflation.
Like all Therm-a-Rest mats, the Trail Scout is manufactured in Ireland for quality and environmental reasons.

How long does it take for a self-inflating sleeping mat to inflate itself?
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is a classic "it depends." Generally, it takes 5-15 minutes for a self-inflating sleeping mat to inflate itself. A variation of 10 minutes is likely due to one of the following factors: core construction, training compression, altitude, and temperature.
Why don't self-inflating sleeping mats inflate completely?
Self-inflation begins when the valve is opened and ends when an equilibrium is reached between the atmospheric pressure outside the cells and the air pressure inside the cells, which pushes in the opposite direction. In our experience, most users require more air than the equilibrium level for comfort, which is why the self-inflating pillows do not inflate "to the maximum."
Self-inflating sleeping mats were never intended to inflate completely. Some people prefer a softer surface that conforms better to their body, while others need the firm support of a fully inflated mat. The option of manual inflation – whether by lungs, a pump sack, or a battery-powered pump – allows for individual customization of the sleeping mat.
Self-inflating means covering most of the distance, making it incredibly easy to inflate a sleeping mat to the desired comfort level. This is one of the major advantages of self-inflating sleeping mats: they are much easier to inflate than air mattresses.
